Batur Natural Hot Spring

Batur Natural Hot Spring on the shores of the sacred Lake Batur at the centre of the Kintamani caldera in Bali, Indonesia, emerges from geothermal vents heated by the active Mount Batur volcano, whose most recent major eruption in 1963 devastated surrounding villages and whose frequent activity since has made the mountain one of Bali's most monitored and revered geological features. The geothermal and sulphurous spring water fills pools in the village of Toya Bungkah beside the lake, with spectacular views across the caldera lake to the volcano's summit and the outer rim of the ancient mega-caldera that collapsed to form this extraordinary landscape thousands of years before the current volcanic cone began building. The Balinese Hindu spiritual context of Lake Batur, considered a sacred purification site where the goddess Dewi Danu resides in the lake's waters, gives every bathing experience here a ceremonial dimension inseparable from Balinese cosmology and the island's living spiritual culture.
