Matano Lake Hot Spring

Matano Lake Hot Spring is found near Lake Matano in the Nuha district of South Sulawesi, one of the world's oldest and deepest lakes at approximately 590 meters deep, whose ancient isolated ecosystem has produced endemic species found nowhere else on Earth, including unique freshwater shrimp and fish adapted to its crystal-clear oligotrophic waters over millions of years. The surrounding Sulawesi landscape is defined by the massive PT Vale nickel processing complex, one of the largest nickel mining operations in the world, which contrasts dramatically with the pristine lake environment. The hot springs near Matano's shores draw on geothermal activity in this tectonically active region, offering mineral bathing beside waters of extraordinary natural heritage in one of Southeast Asia's least-visited inland lake districts.
