Nagrak Hot Spring

Nagrak Hot Spring in West Java is a sulfated and bicarbonate volcanic spring in the volcanic highland landscape of West Java's intensely geothermally active interior, where the chain of active stratovolcanoes — Salak, Gede-Pangrango, Tangkuban Perahu, Papandayan, Guntur, Ciremai — produces one of the world's densest concentrations of volcanic hot springs per unit area. The springs' sulfated mineral profile reflects the chemical character of acidic volcanic gases dissolving in groundwater as it passes through volcanic rock, a process characteristic of West Java's high-sulfur volcanic arc. Nagrak's springs contribute to the broad geothermal heritage of the Sunda Arc's West Java section, where virtually every major volcano has associated thermal springs used by local communities for bathing and agricultural purposes in one of the world's most densely populated volcanic landscapes.
