Dirang Hot Springs

Dirang Hot Springs are found in Dirang in West Kameng District of Arunachal Pradesh, a small valley community set in the beautiful Dirang Valley where apple orchards, yak herds, and the sound of Tibetan Buddhist prayer wheels turning in the wind create an atmosphere of Himalayan pastoral tranquility. Dirang is notable for the ancient Dirang Dzong (medieval fort) whose traditional stone construction overlooks the valley from a rocky promontory, one of the best-preserved examples of medieval fortification architecture in Arunachal Pradesh's western districts. The surrounding mountains shelter the Sangti Valley, home to a significant wintering population of the endangered black-necked crane — a bird considered sacred in Tibetan Buddhist culture and one of the most striking birds in Asia, its elegant black-and-white plumage and crimson crown visible as the birds forage in the valley's fields during winter months. The hot springs at Dirang draw on geothermal sources in the Eastern Himalayan suture zone, providing bicarbonate mineral bathing at high altitude in a valley where apple cultivation, Buddhist tradition, ancient forts, and sacred crane wintering grounds combine in a setting of unusual and memorable richness.
