Namsai Thermal

Namsai Thermal is located in Namsai, the headquarters of Namsai District in the southeastern corner of Arunachal Pradesh near the Assam border, a district known as the 'Land of Golden Pagodas' for the concentration of Buddhist temples and pagodas built by the Tai Khamti people — a Theravada Buddhist community related to the Shan people of Myanmar and the Dai people of Yunnan, China, who migrated to this corner of Arunachal Pradesh centuries ago and established a living tradition of Theravada Buddhist practice and gilded temple architecture that stands in striking contrast to the Tibetan Mahayana Buddhist traditions of western Arunachal Pradesh. The Khamti Buddhist New Year festival (Sanken) is celebrated with elaborate ceremonies, water splashing, and community feasting that reflect the close cultural connections between Namsai's Tai communities and the broader Tai Buddhist civilization of Southeast Asia. The Singpho people also inhabit Namsai, their tradition of tea cultivation having contributed to the development of Assam tea culture through early knowledge transfer. The thermal springs here provide bicarbonate mineral bathing in this culturally unique southeastern gateway of India's most diverse northeastern state.
