Besh Bajilar Spa in Sarein, Ardabil Province, northwestern Iran, is one of the numerous thermal spa facilities in Iran's premier hot spring resort town, drawing on bicarbonate and calcium-rich geothermal water from the volcanic hydrothermal system of Mount Sabalan — Iran's third-highest mountain and one of the country's most geothermally active volcanoes, whose summit crater contains a permanent hot spring lake at 4,811 metres. Sarein has developed into Iran's most concentrated thermal spa destination, with dozens of hotels and spa complexes drawing on Sabalan's extraordinary geothermal output, and Besh Bajilar represents one of the many facilities competing to offer the most medically and aesthetically distinctive version of this volcanic water. The Ardabil region's cultural heritage, dominated by the UNESCO-listed Sheikh Safi al-Din Shrine — the birthplace of the Safavid dynasty and one of Iran's finest examples of Islamic architecture — complements Sarein's geothermal appeal in one of northwestern Iran's most historically layered tourism landscapes.
