Skógarböðin — 'Forest Baths' — is a geothermal bathing site in Iceland whose name evokes a wooded setting unusual in a country where most of the original birch forests were cleared in the centuries following Norse settlement. Today less than two percent of Iceland is forested, making any site associated with trees a rarity, and Skógarböðin may reference a location near one of Iceland's replanted woodland areas where geothermal spring water has been harnessed into a bathing facility. The site combines the warmth of volcanic water with the sheltering atmosphere of one of Iceland's precious wooded landscapes.
