The chloride-sodium-sulphurous waters emerge at temperatures between 40°C and 75°C from the flanks of Mount Epomeo, Ischia's 789-metre extinct volcano, and have been used therapeutically since Greek colonisation in the 8th century BC. Casamicciola has a particular history as a favourite retreat of 19th-century European aristocracy and intellectuals, including Henrik Ibsen who wrote part of Peer Gynt here.
