Terme Manzi in Casamicciola Terme occupies one of Ischia's oldest and most storied thermal establishments, the Grand Hotel Terme Manzi, where the Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen retreated in the summer of 1867 to complete Peer Gynt — one of the masterworks of European dramatic literature — amid the mineral spring gardens and the fragrant warmth of the Bay of Naples. The town of Casamicciola was devastated by a catastrophic earthquake in July 1883 that killed more than 2,300 people and reduced much of the settlement to rubble, yet it rebuilt itself around the thermal springs that had always been its reason for existence. Today the terme continue this resilient tradition, offering thermal bathing in a historic establishment whose cultural associations span Norwegian literature and Italian thermal heritage in equal measure.
Insider tip — Terme Manzi is one of Ischia's grandest historic establishments, housed in a nineteenth-century villa in Casamicciola Terme that once hosted composer Richard Wagner and philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. Bicarbonate-alkaline waters emerge at 40°C from the island's caldera hydrothermal system and are applied in mud packs, inhalations, and pool soaks. The ornate architecture and lush botanical garden give this terme a distinctly Belle Époque character. Book a mud-pack session early in the day when the volcanic thermal mud is freshest and most potent.
