At the gates of Tivoli, the Acque Albule take their name — "whitish waters" — from the gaseous emulsion that clouds their surface as dissolved carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide are released. Already mentioned by Pliny the Elder, who called them the "Acque Santissime" (most holy waters), they once fed the imperial baths commissioned by Augustus to his architect Vespasianus Agrippa. The site draws its water from two natural sources, Lake Regina and Lake Colonnelle.
Together these two lakes yield an impressive flow, reportedly several thousand litres per second, ranking the Acque Albule among the most abundant sulphurous springs in Europe. Now managed by Terme di Roma, the site continues a tradition of thermal wellness rooted in the ancient history of Lazio, between legend and heritage.
