Stufe Antiche — 'Ancient Stoves' — is a historic natural geothermal site in Italy, possibly on Ischia or in the volcanic zone of the Campania coast, where volcanic steam vents and sulphurous natural saunas have been used since antiquity for heat therapy and fumigation treatments. The ancient Romans used such natural steam vents (stufe) extensively in their balneological medicine, and the tradition of volcanic steam bathing (sudationes) in natural geological features continues in several locations in Italy's active volcanic zones. The surrounding volcanic landscape, whether the island of Ischia's volcanic gardens or the Phlegraean Fields near Naples, provides an intensely geological setting for this ancient form of natural geothermal therapy.
