Surgiva Cavura Sclafani is a natural sulphurous spring near Sclafani Bagni in the Madonie mountains of inland Sicily, one of the most remarkably preserved medieval spa villages in Italy, where sulphurous thermal water has supported a bathing tradition since Arab and Norman times in an extraordinary mountain landscape of ancient cultivation, fossil ammonite beds, and medieval hilltop architecture. Sclafani Bagni, whose very name means 'Sclafani Baths', was developed as a thermal resort during the Arab and Norman periods of Sicily (9th-12th centuries) and retains its historic bathing tradition in a setting of exceptional cultural and natural beauty. The surrounding Madonie mountains — Sicily's second highest massif and one of the island's most important nature parks — provide a dramatic backdrop of rugged Sicilian mountain scenery.
