Terme di Sciacca

Terme di Sciacca on the southwestern coast of Sicily is one of the Mediterranean's most historically significant and scenically atmospheric thermal sites — the hot springs at Sciacca have been in use since the Carthaginian period, and the cavern springs (Cave Vaporose) where natural steam rises from underground fissures at temperatures of 30–40°C through clay-sealed rock chambers are appreciated for their warmth and skin comfort in an ancient and essentially unchanged form. The spring water, which emerges from the basalt and limestone of the Agrigento coastline, is enjoyed for relaxation and well-being in a long Sicilian thermal tradition. The hilltop town of Sciacca itself, with its Norman church of San Nicola, the Spanish quarter of the old city and the extraordinary view over the Mediterranean towards the Pelagie islands and the African coast, provides one of Sicily's most dramatically beautiful urban settings. The Valley of the Temples at Agrigento, one of the world's finest ancient Greek archaeological sites, is just 35 kilometres east.
