Tsurunoyu Onsen Nozawa

Nozawa Onsen in the Nagano prefecture mountains is celebrated as one of Japan's finest traditional onsen villages — a perfectly preserved Edo-period mountain settlement where ancient cedar-plank bathhouses (soto-yu) heated by sulphurous spring water have been maintained and shared by local residents for generations in a communal bathing tradition of remarkable cultural continuity. The 13 public baths of Nozawa are free to use and run by the community association, maintaining a principle of onsen as public good that dates back centuries.
