Tucked in the mountains west of Fukushima City, Tsuchiyu Onsen carries more than a thousand years of history, linked by legend to Prince Shotoku, whose Yakushi-do temple — rebuilt in 1726 after a fire and restored again in 1974 — houses a statue designated a cultural property of Fukushima City. The village is also the birthplace of a distinctive craft: since the late Edo period, master woodturners here have shaped Tsuchiyu kokeshi, wooden dolls recognizable by their heads marked with two concentric black rings and bodies decorated with hand-turned patterns.

This living heritage, blending Buddhist legend with an artisanal tradition passed down through generations, gives this Tohoku onsen a character deeply rooted in rural Japan.

Insider tip — Tsuchiyu is a compact Tohoku onsen village straddling a forested gorge of the Arawa River in the Azuma mountain range above Fukushima city. The acidic sulfurous water with a distinct milky hue flows through a dozen small traditional inns and a public communal bath. The village is recovering from population decline accelerated after 2011 and retains an intimate, unhurried atmosphere that large resort onsens have lost. Autumn koyo foliage along the gorge in October transforms the scenery into vivid crimson and gold.
