Insider tip — 'Azuma Onsen' (吾妻温泉) on the flanks of the Azuma volcanic range (吾妻山) west of Fukushima city, in the same geothermal zone as the famous Takayu Onsen. The Azuma mountains — particularly the active Ura-Bandai area — produce powerfully sulfurous volcanic springs. The area was famously the site of the 1888 Bandai volcanic eruption, one of Japan's most catastrophic.
