Takayu Onsen is a historic hot spring resort located in the Zainiwasaka mountain district approximately 14 km west of Fukushima Station in Fukushima City, Fukushima Prefecture, situated at around 750 meters elevation on the forested slopes of the Azuma volcanic range within Bandai-Asahi National Park. The siliceous thermal waters are celebrated for their remarkably silky texture and exceptional skin-softening properties — a result of high silica content that has earned Takayu the reputation for bijin-no-yu (waters of beautiful skin) — as well as their effectiveness for musculoskeletal complaints. The surrounding subalpine scenery of beech forests, alpine meadows, and panoramic volcanic mountain views, combined with traditional wooden ryokan inns whose architecture has changed little in over a century, makes Takayu Onsen one of Tohoku's most atmospheric and aesthetically rewarding mountain hot spring retreats.
