Goshiki Onsen in Yamagata Prefecture is a hot spring in the Yonezawa area, part of the celebrated Yonezawa Eight Hot Springs cluster, whose sulfated and calcareous waters have attracted bathers to this mountain district for generations. The onsen was operated by the long-standing Sokawa Ryokan inn before its closure in November 2020, and the facility was subsequently renovated and reopened in December 2023 as a hot spring auto-campsite, giving visitors a new way to enjoy the thermal waters within the natural mountain setting of southern Yamagata. The Five Colors name evokes the shifting visual character of the spring waters, while the Yonezawa region's association with Date Masamune, the powerful feudal lord who built Yonezawa Castle, adds historical depth to this thermally active mountain district.

Insider tip — Goshiki Onsen in the Azuma mountains of Yamagata prefecture is a remote highland hot spring in the volcanic range that straddles the Yamagata-Fukushima border, surrounded by the deep snow country of northern Honshu. The calcium-sulfate waters emerge in a landscape of volcanic peaks and beech forests near Yonezawa — a historic castle town of the Uesugi clan — where the onsen tradition is woven into one of Japan's snowiest and most dramatically mountainous regions.
