Kakeyu Onsen is a long-established hot spring resort in Ueda city's Maruko area, situated in the Chikuma River basin of eastern Nagano Prefecture, a region celebrated for its production of Japan's finest kanten (agar-agar), its silk weaving heritage, and its famous walnut soba noodles unique to the Ueda highlands. The siliceous thermal waters are renowned throughout Nagano Prefecture for their exceptional skin-softening and beautifying properties, drawing the nickname bijin-no-yu (beauty waters) — a title earned through generations of bathers who credited the high-silica springs for their clear complexions.
