Hotta Onsen

Hotta Onsen sits within the coastal city of Ibusuki at the southern tip of Kagoshima Prefecture, a stretch of Kyushu renowned for its volcanic activity and one of Japan's most storied onsen landscapes. The town of Ibusuki itself is famous for its sand-steam baths along the shoreline, and Hotta Onsen participates in this same geothermal richness, offering a quieter, more intimate alternative to the larger resort facilities that define the area.

The water, a silica-rich spring at 42 °C with a near-neutral pH of 7.9, is prized in Japanese onsen culture for the characteristic silky softness it imparts to the skin — a quality known locally as "bijin-no-yu," or "beauty water." The slightly alkaline register lends the bath an exceptionally smooth, almost velvety quality.
