Insider tip — Yamakawa sits on the southern tip of Kyushu at the edge of the Ata Caldera, one of Japan's great volcanic depressions, where the sea meets steaming geothermal vents along a crescent-shaped bay. The intensely sulfurous waters here are among the hottest in Kagoshima Prefecture and emerge in striking shades of milky blue-white. Soak while gazing across Kinko Bay toward the perpetually smoking cone of Sakurajima volcano. Visit the nearby sand steam baths at Ibusuki if the heat allows — the buried-in-black-volcanic-sand experience is unique to this southern tip of Japan.
