Ibusuki Onsen

Ibusuki Onsen in the Ibusuki city area of Kagoshima Prefecture, Kyushu, is celebrated throughout Japan for its unique sunamushi, or natural sand bathing, where the black volcanic sand of the beach is heated from below by geothermal energy to create a natural sauna into which bathers are buried up to their necks for ten to fifteen minutes in an experience uniquely combining geothermal warmth with the mineral character of the volcanic sand, without parallel at any other Japanese onsen destination. The sodium and chloride-rich spring water of Ibusuki also feeds conventional indoor and outdoor baths whose thermal waters are part of a long bathing tradition in a city at the tip of the Satsuma Peninsula overlooking Kinko Bay, where the dramatic Sakurajima volcano steams and occasionally erupts just across the water, providing a constant volcanic reminder of the geothermal energy underlying the entire spa tradition. The extraordinary sunamushi experience, the spectacle of Sakurajima, and the subtropical climate of southern Kagoshima combining bamboo forests, palm trees, and volcanic landscapes make Ibusuki one of Japan's most visually and experientially distinctive onsen destinations.
