Yunokami Onsen is a beautifully preserved hot-spring village in the mountainous Shimogo district of Fukushima Prefecture, in the Aizu region of northern Honshu. The settlement has retained much of its historical character — traditional thatched farmhouses known as gassho-zukuri were relocated here and still stand above the Agano River gorge, giving the village the atmosphere of a living architectural museum set against a backdrop of forested ravines and seasonal foliage.
The silica-rich waters emerge at 42 °C with a near-neutral pH of 7.1, a composition that produces a distinctively silky and enveloping sensation in the bath. In Japanese onsen tradition, silica waters are valued for the delicate softness they leave on the skin.
