Ashinomaki Onsen is a traditional hot spring resort located in the mountains near the historic castle city of Aizuwakamatsu in Fukushima Prefecture, northeastern Japan. The sulfurous mineral waters of Ashinomaki have been used therapeutically for many centuries and are particularly prized for their warming, relaxing properties and their beneficial effect on rheumatic and circulatory conditions. The resort retains a pleasingly old-fashioned atmosphere with traditional wooden ryokan inns lining the valley road, a public foot bath on the main street, and the general air of a resort that has changed little from the great Meiji-era heyday of Japanese hot spring tourism.
