Higashiyama Onsen Fukushima

Higashiyama Onsen Fukushima is located in the Higashiyama district of Aizuwakamatsu in Fukushima Prefecture, one of the three great historic onsen of the Aizu region and a hot spring community intimately connected to the poignant history of the Boshin War's Battle of Aizu in 1868 — a battle in which the loyalist Aizu domain made its last stand against the Meiji imperial forces, and where the Byakkotai, a unit of teenage samurai between 15 and 17 years old, famously committed ritual suicide on the slope of Iimori Hill after mistakenly believing their castle had fallen. The nearby Tsuruga-jo Castle, one of Japan's best-preserved feudal fortresses, stands as a symbol of Aizu's fierce loyalty and its distinctive samurai culture that continues to define the region's identity today. The onsen at Higashiyama, whose silica-rich waters have soothed Aizu's samurai families for centuries, provide mineral bathing in a setting where Japan's most dramatic chapter of feudal-to-modern transition is preserved in living cultural memory.
