Hitoyoshi Onsen is located in Hitoyoshi City, Kumamoto Prefecture, a compact castle town in the Kuma River basin where traditional wooden buildings, a well-preserved Heian-period castle, and artisanal sake breweries create an atmosphere of remarkable historical authenticity. The siliceous thermal waters here flow through a town celebrated for the Kuma River rapids — one of Japan's three great river rapids, attracting kayakers and rafters — as well as Hitoyoshi's famous kuma shochu crafted from pure river water and sweet potato harvest. These hot springs provide the perfect complement to Kuma River adventure and Hitoyoshi's living heritage as one of Kyushu's most beautifully preserved historic castle towns.
