Issho-chi Onsen, also known as Kawasemi, is located in Kuma, Kumamoto Prefecture. The sodium-chloride thermal water reaches roughly 39°C, with an indoor bath, an outdoor rotenburo bath and a sauna.
Insider tip — 'Kawasemi' (翡翠 — kingfisher) at Issho-chi Onsen in Kuma-mura, a small village in the Kuma River gorge of Kumamoto. Kuma-mura was devastated by the catastrophic July 2020 floods (令和2年7月豪雨), Japan's worst flood disaster in decades, which killed 65 people in the village and destroyed much of its fabric. The kingfisher — symbol of clear, living rivers — gave this spring its name before the flood. Its recovery, like the Kuma River's, speaks to the resilience of mountain communities.
