About twenty kilometers north of Hakodate, in Onuma Quasi-National Park on the island of Hokkaido, the lakes Onuma, Konuma and Junsainuma were shaped by past eruptions of the active volcano Mount Komagatake. Established in 1903 as one of Japan's oldest nature parks, the area was visited by Prince Heinrich of Germany in 1879 and Emperor Meiji in 1881, and was later named among Japan's 'new three scenic views' in 1916.
Nearby onsen facilities draw on naturally hot water at the base of Komagatake, with open-air rotenburo baths overlooking the ponds and surrounding forest — especially atmospheric after dark. The setting combines volcanic geology and lakeside scenery found nowhere else in Hokkaido.
