Komagamine Onsen Chappurinkan, in Mori on the island of Hokkaido, taps sodium-chloride thermal water at 40°C, with an indoor bath, an outdoor rotenburo and a sauna.
Insider tip — Mori-machi faces Funka-wan (Volcano Bay, also called Uchiura Bay) — directly opposite the active Usu Volcano and Mt. Komagatake stratovolcano. The town is famous throughout Japan for two things: the Mori corn sold at JR Mori Station since 1956 (Japan's most celebrated platform snack), and the ikameshi (squid stuffed with glutinous rice, sold in ekiben boxes). Komagamine Onsen sits at the base of Mt. Komagatake, offering volcanic thermal waters with bay views.
