Adachi Onsen

Adachi Onsen is a community thermal bath in Adachi Ward in northeastern Tokyo, one of Tokyo's largest wards by population and historically one of its most working-class communities, whose post-industrial revival is reflected in an ambitious program of public murals, community art spaces, and cultural facilities that has transformed the ward's self-image from a stereotypically gritty industrial suburb to an urban canvas of community creativity. The siliceous mineral waters provide daily thermal relaxation for the residents of a ward whose traditional shitamachi culture, Soka Kaido highway heritage, and the iconic Nishiarai Daishi temple—one of Tokyo's most beloved Buddhist sites, established in 826 CE by Kobo Daishi and drawing millions of New Year worshippers annually—give the community a deep historical identity beneath its modern industrial surface.
