Yoichi Onsen

Yoichi Onsen is located in Yoichi on the base of the Shakotan Peninsula in western Hokkaido, the birthplace of Japanese whisky as we know it — Masataka Taketsuru, the founder of Nikka Whisky, established his distillery here in 1934 after studying Scotch whisky production in Scotland, choosing Yoichi for its cool, misty climate reminiscent of Scottish Highland conditions, and the distillery remains one of Japan's most visited and celebrated whisky production sites. The Shakotan Peninsula's rugged sea cliffs and cobalt-blue waters are among Hokkaido's most photographed landscapes, and the region's apple orchards produce fruit of exceptional quality in the mild maritime climate.
