Iizuka Onsen

Iizuka Onsen is found in Iizuka, a city in the Chikuho coalfield district of Fukuoka Prefecture that was once at the heart of Japan's most productive coal mining region — the Chikuho Basin supplied the coal that fueled Japan's Meiji and Taisho-era industrialization, and the fortunes built on coal mining created a distinctive regional culture of fierce labor organization, dramatic mining disasters, and the boom-and-bust cycles that shaped the communities of northern Kyushu's interior. Today Iizuka preserves this industrial heritage in museums and the Iizuka City Coal and Science Museum, while transitioning toward modern manufacturing and service industries. The onsen here draw on silica-rich geothermal waters from the thermal activity associated with the complex geology of the Chikuho basin's coal-bearing formations, providing mineral bathing in a city whose industrial coal mining heritage gives it a distinctive working-class character quite different from the polished tourist destinations of coastal Fukuoka.
