Amagi Onsen

Amagi Onsen is located in Asakura, a city in the Chikugo region of Fukuoka Prefecture whose Amagi area preserves a historic townscape along the former Nagasaki Kaido — one of the great highways of the Edo period that connected Nagasaki, Japan's sole gateway for foreign trade during the Sakoku closed-country policy, with Kokura and ultimately Edo (Tokyo), and along which Dutch and Chinese traders, their exotic goods, and occasionally Western medical and scientific knowledge made their way into a Japan officially closed to the outside world. The surrounding Asakura area is also noted for the quality of its agricultural produce in the fertile Chikugo River plain, and the Amagi Inari Shrine draws worshippers from across the region to its forested hillside sanctuary. The onsen draw on silica-rich geothermal waters from the volcanic geology of this part of Kyushu, providing mineral bathing in a historic townscape where the echoes of Japan's great Nagasaki highway add cultural depth to the simple pleasure of thermal immersion.
