Goto Islands Onsen is found in the Goto Islands (Goto-retto) in western Nagasaki Prefecture, an archipelago of extraordinary natural beauty and Christian heritage recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site component for its network of Hidden Christian Sites — some of the most poignant monuments to Japan's suppressed Christian community, who maintained their faith in secret for over 200 years during the Tokugawa ban on Christianity, emerging from hiding in 1865 and finding they had preserved a living tradition through generations of clandestine practice. The Goto Islands' dramatic seascapes of jagged volcanic coastlines, emerald coves, and small fishing communities, together with the delicate wooden churches built by the Christian community after persecution ended, create one of Japan's most moving and visually stunning heritage landscapes. Fukue Castle, the only remaining 'water castle' (mizujo) in Japan — built directly on the sea — and the archipelago's exceptional biodiversity of marine life, seabirds, and endemic flora add further depth to what is already one of Kyushu's most compelling island destinations.
