Hitachitaga Onsen lies close to the spectacular Fukuroda Falls, ranked among Japan's three greatest waterfalls and celebrated for the extraordinary theatrical quality of its four-face display — a 120-meter cascade descending through four distinct ledges of Precambrian granite whose appearance changes completely with each season: ice-fringed in winter, lush and mist-veiled in summer, framed by burning maples in autumn, and brilliant white against spring greenery. The falls were formed by the erosion of an ancient igneous intrusion, and the same geological structure that produced this scenic wonder generates the mineral-rich geothermal waters of the onsen nearby. Bathing in these spring waters while within reach of one of Japan's most magnificent waterfalls creates a complete experience of Ibaraki's northern natural heritage, where geology expresses itself simultaneously in cascading water and rising thermal spring.
