Mobara Onsen taps into a geological curiosity unique to the Kanto region — the Boso Peninsula's underground sedimentary deposits release natural gas along with the geothermal waters, a phenomenon known as 'Kanto gas' that has been used for household cooking and heating by communities along the western Chiba coast since at least the Meiji period, making the Mobara and Chiba gas fields some of Japan's most unusual and historically significant natural energy resources. The surrounding Mobara landscape of rice paddies, peanut fields, and the gentle ridges of the Boso hills reflects the productive agricultural character of central Chiba, where farming traditions established in the Edo period continue to supply fresh produce to the Tokyo metropolitan market.
