Kurobe Onsen

Kurobe Onsen serves a city whose name is synonymous with one of Japan's greatest feats of modern engineering — the Kurobe Dam, completed in 1963 at the cost of 171 workers' lives over seven years of construction in one of the most extreme natural environments in Japan, rising 186 meters to become the country's highest dam and creating the alpine reservoir that anchors the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route through the Northern Alps. The route itself, connecting Toyama to Nagano via a sequence of cable cars, trolley buses, and ropeways that traverse the Tateyama mountain range at altitudes up to 2,450 meters, is one of Japan's most celebrated scenic experiences — a journey through snowfields, alpine meadows, and the sheer rock faces of the Kurobe gorge in a landscape of overwhelming scale. The onsen's siliceous mineral waters provide restorative bathing in a city from which the engineering triumph and natural grandeur of the Kurobe landscape can be accessed, offering thermal warmth at the foot of mountains that challenge and inspire in equal measure.
