Shika Onsen

Shika Onsen serves a community on the Noto Peninsula's western coast where the Japan Sea pounds rocky shorelines backed by farmland producing some of the peninsula's characteristic agricultural specialties — sweet Noto onions, dried squid, and the artisanal salt produced along the coast using traditional evaporation methods that have been practiced on the Noto for over a thousand years. The Shika area carries the weight of contemporary energy politics as the location of the Shika Nuclear Power Plant, whose continued operation has been the subject of ongoing debate particularly following the January 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake that caused significant concern about the plant's safety systems and resistance to the region's seismic activity. The onsen's siliceous mineral waters, rising from the geothermal resources of the Noto's coastal geology, provide restorative thermal bathing in a seaside community whose character is shaped by the competing forces of traditional maritime agriculture and the challenges of hosting critical energy infrastructure on an earthquake-prone peninsula.
