Nakanoto Onsen flows in the middle section of the Noto Peninsula where the traditional satoyama and satoumi landscape — the integrated system of mountain farming, village life, and coastal fishing that has shaped the Noto's communities for centuries — was recognized in 2011 as a UNESCO Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (GIAHS), one of only a handful of such inscriptions in Japan, honoring the way Noto people have maintained a harmonious relationship with their environment across more than a thousand years of continuous agricultural practice. The GIAHS designation acknowledges the Noto's exceptional preservation of traditional rice cultivation in coastal terraces, traditional fishing methods in the Japan Sea, and the village festivals and crafts that bind together the communities of the peninsula into a living cultural landscape of remarkable integrity. The onsen's siliceous mineral waters invite guests to soak in the warmth of a landscape that UNESCO has recognized as one of Earth's most outstanding examples of humanity living in sustainable relationship with the natural systems that sustain it.
