Ojiya Onsen

Ojiya Onsen serves a city in the Uonuma region of Niigata Prefecture famous for three extraordinary things: the Ojiya chijimi — a traditional crinkled linen fabric of exceptional delicacy woven in winter using the region's heavy snowfall to bleach the finished cloth in a technique inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list alongside the related Shiozawa Tsumugi — the Yamakoshi district's exquisite Nishikigoi decorative carp, bred in the mountain valley ponds using carefully preserved genetic lines to produce prize fish worth tens of thousands of dollars each, and the devastating 2004 Chuetsu earthquake whose epicenter below the Uonuma mountains caused massive landslides and building collapses that tested the community's resilience in ways whose recovery remains ongoing.
