Esashi Onsen Hokkaido Extended

Esashi, in the Hiyama subprefecture on the Sea of Japan coast of southern Hokkaido, was one of the wealthiest fishing towns in nineteenth-century Hokkaido when the great herring boom transformed this coastal community into a prosperous port, its legacy preserved in the extraordinary collection of traditional herring merchant mansions (nishin goten) and the Esashi Oiwake folk song — one of Japan's most celebrated regional folk songs, sung in the distinctive pentatonic style of the Hokkaido coast.
