The Kaminokuni-cho Kokumin Onsen Hoyo Center, also known as Yunotai Onsen, is located in the village of Kaminokuni, at the southern tip of Hokkaido. Its sodium-chloride thermal water reaches around 40°C (pH 7.3), with an indoor bath, an outdoor rotenburo and a sauna.
Insider tip — Kaminokuni-cho (Upper Country) is one of Hokkaido's oldest Japanese settlements — the Matsumae domain established its earliest military presence here in the 15th century, making Kaminokuni a cradle of Japanese Hokkaido history. The Katsuyama Castle ruins reflect this frontier heritage. The Sea of Japan's cold currents pass the town's coast, making the Yunotai Onsen recuperation center a warming refuge on the Oshima Peninsula's austere but beautiful western shore. The Matsumae castle town — Hokkaido's only feudal castle — lies nearby.
