Taenoyu is one of the most celebrated ryokan in the legendary Nyuto Onsen cluster of Akita prefecture, deep in the ancient beech forests of the Towada-Hachimantai National Park where seven distinct hot spring sources each yield their own mineral character and water color. Sulfurous milky-white nigori-yu fills the thatched open-air rotenburo overlooking a forested mountain stream, creating one of Japan's most photographed and atmospherically pure wild-nature bathing experiences. Nyuto's remoteness — accessible only by winding mountain roads through old-growth beech forest — has preserved an onsen culture of rare intimacy and purity that devoted guests return to season after season.
