Ganiba Onsen Nyuto

Ganiba Onsen is one of the seven legendary ryokan of the Nyuto Onsen cluster, a remote thermal village buried in the beech forests of Akita Prefecture in northern Honshu. Reached only by a winding forest road that gradually strips away the modern world, the low-eaved wooden inn embodies the most elemental form of Japanese onsen culture, especially dramatic under the heavy winter snowfall of the Tohoku region.

The bicarbonate waters emerge at 41 °C with a strikingly alkaline pH of 8.9, lending the water an unusually silky, almost lotion-like quality on the skin that has made Nyuto Onsen famous throughout northern Japan. The outdoor baths—hewn from timber and moss-covered rock—open directly onto the steaming forest. Ganiba is cherished above all for the milky opacity of its spring water and for the profound sense of removal from everyday life that its forest setting provides.
