Kirishima Onsen Maruo

Kirishima Onsen Maruo in Kirishima city, Kagoshima Prefecture, lies within the Kirishima volcanic complex, a chain of active volcanoes sacred to the Shinto tradition as the site where the divine grandchild Ninigi descended from the heavens to begin the divine lineage that would eventually produce Japan's imperial family, making this landscape one of the most mythologically significant in all of Japanese religious culture. The siliceous spring water flows from the volcanic geology of a mountain range whose most active peak, Shinmoedake, has erupted repeatedly in recent decades, providing dramatic evidence of the same geothermal energy that warms the mineral pools below.
