Kuroyu Onsen

Deep in the Semboku district of Akita Prefecture, surrounded by the beech forests of the Towada-Hachimantai National Park, Kuroyu Onsen is one of the most isolated and celebrated historic mountain inns in all of Tohoku. Access has historically required a significant journey on foot or by mountain road, and the spring retains the atmosphere of a genuine toji destination — a place to which visitors once came for extended stays measured in weeks, not nights.

The water is a silica spring, emerging at a notably high 58 °C, with a near-neutral pH of 7.9 that gives it a clean, almost crystalline quality. Silica-rich waters are prized in Japan for the exceptionally smooth sensation they impart — a softness that feels unlike any other spring type. The source at Kuroyu is milky white, the colour produced by fine silica particles suspended in the water, creating a visually distinctive bath that steams against the mountain cold. In autumn, the surrounding forest turns to fire; in winter, snow-laden branches arch above the outdoor pools.
