Kinosaki Onsen's outdoor bathing experience includes the unique 'mandarinboat' rotenburo — a floating outdoor bath boat on the Otani River that flows through the famous seven-bathhouse onsen town of Hyogo's premier hot spring resort, where guests in yukata robes traditionally walk the willow-lined stone streets to visit all seven public bathhouses in an evening ritual known as 'sotoyu meguri.' The chloride-rich spring waters of Kinosaki have been flowing for 1,300 years since the Buddhist monk Dōchi bathed here for 1,000 days while praying for flood victims, and the town retains its original Edo-period streetscape of wooden machiya townhouses alongside the river.
