Insider tip — 'Oedo Onsen Monogatari; Kinosaki' — a major resort chain facility at Kinosaki Onsen (城崎温泉) in Toyooka, Hyogo — one of Japan's most beloved and iconic hot spring towns. Kinosaki's seven public outdoor bathhouses (soto-yu) have been the model for Japanese onsen town culture since the 8th century. The author Shiga Naoya wrote his masterpiece 'At Kinosaki' here in 1917 after a near-fatal accident — the seven baths became a meditation on life, death, and the small creatures we overlook. Yukata-clad visitors hopping between all seven baths is one of Japan's most photographed cultural scenes.
