Iwai Onsen Tottori Kaike, in the Sakaiminato area of Tottori Prefecture on the Sea of Japan coast, draws on chloride thermal waters near the Kaike Onsen resort district — one of San'in's most popular coastal hot spring destinations, where saline springs have been used for therapeutic bathing and thalasso-style treatments in an oceanfront setting since the Meiji era. The naturally saline waters, typical of the coastal geothermal springs of the Tottori shoreline, are highly valued for their warming and skin-nourishing properties in the cool maritime climate of the Sea of Japan coast. Sakaiminato is also celebrated across Japan as the hometown of manga artist Shigeru Mizuki, creator of GeGeGe no Kitarō — the iconic supernatural comedy that gave the city its famous Kitaro characters street, where bronze monsters and yokai line the shopping arcade in one of Tottori's most distinctive cultural destinations.
