Yunishigawa Onsen Nikko is located in the Yunishigawa valley in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture, in a remote mountain gorge accessible by the narrow-gauge Yagan Railway — one of Japan's most dramatically situated onsen valleys, whose legend connects it to the hiding place of the vanquished Taira (Heike) clan warriors after their defeat by the Minamoto at the Battle of Dan-no-ura in 1185. The chloride-rich hot spring waters emerge from the ancient geological formations of the Kinu River upper valley, and the area is celebrated for its Tochigi-Nikkō Yunishigawa Onsen winter festival, during which a village of snow houses (kamakura) and bonfires transforms the snow-buried valley into one of Japan's most magical winter onsen experiences. The remote valley's Heike legends, traditional thatched-roof ryokan, and the extraordinary winter snowscape have made Yunishigawa one of the most atmospheric and historically layered onsen destinations in the Nikko area.
